UF president names Ed Poppell vice president for administrative affairs

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida President Charles E. Young Wednesday named Ed Poppell as permanent vice president for administrative affairs, the university’s chief fiscal and business officer. The appointment is effective June 1.
Since August, Poppell has served as interim vice president. Prior to that he was the associate vice president, a position he has held since 1990.
“The University of Florida is facing unprecedented challenges and opportunities,” Young said. “Meeting these challenges requires leadership that is knowledgeable, experienced, creative and resourceful. Throughout Ed Poppell’s years of service, he has clearly demonstrated his commitment to this institution and his ability to serve as a senior administrator.”
Poppell’s UF career spans 29 years. He joined the university’s finance and accounting division in 1971 after earning a degree in business from Florida State University. He also holds a master’s degree in higher education administration from the University of Florida.
Within the administrative affairs office, Poppell has served as assistant to the vice president and assistant vice president.
He is a member of the Southern Association of College and University Business Offices and currently serves on its board of directors. Poppell also is active with the National Association of College and University Business Officers, the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization and the United Way of Alachua County. He also serves on the boards of directors for Shands HealthCare and the University of Florida Athletic Association.
The vice president for administrative affairs is the chief fiscal and business officer of the University of Florida with responsibilities encompassing all campus budgetary units. The vice president also serves as fiscal and business adviser to the president of the university and treasurer of the University of Florida Foundation.
Divisions reporting to the vice president through an associate vice president and two assistant vice presidents include: business services; environmental health and safety; facilities planning and construction; finance and accounting; information systems; operations analysis; personnel services; physical plant; purchasing; small business and vendor diversity; the Stephen C. O’Connell Center; and the University Police Department.
