University of Florida faculty, staff to receive pay increases

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida staff will receive a 3.6 percent, across-the-board pay increase in August, with faculty members eligible for higher raises from a 5 percent salary fund, President Bernie Machen announced today.
The Florida Legislature approved an across-the-board pay hike of 3.6 percent for state employees during the 2005 legislative session. Faculty increases will come from a fund that includes the across-the-board pay hike and an additional 1.4 percent identified by Machen from university budgets.
“We are grateful to the Florida Legislature for recognizing the contributions of our faculty and staff and including the University of Florida in the annual salary increase for state employees,” Machen said. “In addition, I am pleased to announce an additional salary pool for faculty as part of our ongoing effort to enhance faculty compensation.”
Effective Aug. 1, eligible faculty, TEAMS, USPS and 12-month graduate assistants who were hired before July 1, 2005, will receive a 3.6 percent increase in their base salaries. On Aug. 16, the same increase will be awarded to nine-month faculty, TEAMS, USPS and graduate assistants hired before May 16. Eligible 10-month faculty, TEAMS and USPS employees hired before June 9 will receive the 3.6 percent increase effective Aug. 9.
The 5 percent faculty fund will provide compensation for promotions and special pay plans as well as merit increases based on performance.
In order to be eligible for any increase, faculty and staff members must have a current performance rating of acceptable or better. Members of certified bargaining units may only receive an increase subject to union negotiations.
The August salary increase follows merit-based pay raises Machen approved for faculty on July 1, 2004. In December 2004, faculty and staff received a one-time, across-the-board bonus of $1,000 approved by the Legislature, with staff eligible for additional, merit-based increases on Jan. 28, 2005.
