UF workshop to teach how to start a freelance translation business

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s Translation Studies Certificate Program will sponsor a free workshop Saturday on how to start a freelance translation business.

“This is a unique opportunity to learn about starting up a freelance business from two experienced professionals in the trade,” said Elizabeth Lowe, director of the UF Translation Studies Certificate Program. “You will learn how to start and operate a business, how to advertise your services and the value of networking.”

The workshop will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 349 of the Reitz Student Union. A reception will immediately follow. Translation students and people in the community who are thinking about becoming a translator are invited.

Since Sept. 11, 2001, the need for competent translators has become an urgent national priority. Lowe said the United States is looking for 7,000 experienced translators. To meet this need, UF has responded with its new Translation Studies Certificate Program. The program is the first of its kind in the Southeast. It consists of 15 credits and offers a graduate and undergraduate certificate to UF or nondegree students.

The program offers the academic credentials that most employers require when they hire translators. This program can also be combined with any major or graduate program.
