‘Ligature 2007′ showcases graphic design’s practical style

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A weeklong graphic design show highlighting real-world applications of high-end design called Ligature kicks off with a Feb. 23 opening at the University of Florida College of Fine Arts’Focus Gallery.

Ligature 2007 is the 16th annual design conference organized by the UF student group voxGraphis, based in the School of Art and Art History. The Feb. 23 to March 16 event features workshops, portfolio reviews, panel discussions, open critiques and presentations from attending designers.

As the showcase of design on campus, Ligature also hosts UF’s yearly Graphic Design Juried Exhibition and prominent designers judge student work.

This year, the exhibition will be juried by Ellen Lupton of Maryland Institute College of Art, Ken Barber of House Industries, Jan Wilker of Karlssonwilker Inc., and UF alumni Matt Sung and Karen Horton. The visiting designers also will give workshops, lectures and portfolio reviews.

Opening night at the Focus Gallery runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 23, with lectures at 8:30 p.m. by Ken Barber and Jan Wilker.
