Living Well offers 30-minute workout incentive program

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Living Well, the University of Florida faculty and staff wellness center, is helping its members maintain their fitness goals by offering Living Well 150, a six-week, 30-minute workout incentive program. The program starts this week and continues through April 2. Members can sign up at the Living Well front desk, and the last day to register is Monday.
“The Living Well 150 was developed to motivate members to continue their New Year resolutions of being healthier,” said Cassandra Howard, director of Living Well. “Studies have shown that New Year’s resolutions start to fade after six weeks, so this program hopefully will encourage them to continue exercising and develop a lasting fitness routine.”
The incentive program is a cardio fitness race of 60 laps, the equivalence of 150 miles, around the Daytona International Speedway. Every 30 minutes of cardio completed equals one lap around the track. At the end of six weeks, the top 10 finishers will receive prizes, such as an iPod shuffle.
The Surgeon General’s Report on Physical Activity and Health shows that “just 30 minutes of moderate exercise on most days of the week can dramatically improve your health and well-being.” The Living Well 150 program lets participants choose from a wide variety of 30-minute workout programs such as cardiovascular workouts, calorie-burning intervals, circuit training, basic strength training, body building, flexibility, abs and relaxation.
“Living Well 150 allows members to make a commitment to their health in 2007, without making a huge time commitment,” Howard said.
