UF faculty retreat focuses on alternative energy sources

WHO: University of Florida faculty and researchers who are involved in energy research.
WHAT: This will be the first faculty retreat for members of the new Florida Institute for Sustainable Energy. Members will determine a plan for the institute and discuss ways to promote interdisciplinary research and help address Florida’s and the world’s need for sustainable energy. Subjects for discussion will include global warming, sustainable practices, renewable energy sources, fuel cells and energy education.
BACKGROUND: The institute was officially established Jan. 22. Its commercial component, the FISE Energy Technology Incubator, was recently awarded $4.5 million as a Florida Center of Excellence by the Board of Governors.
WHEN: 7:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8.
Winfred Phillips, UF’s vice president for research, will speak at 8:35 a.m. about the vision for the institute and expected outcomes from the retreat. Group discussions on the various subjects will be held from 10:40 a.m. to noon. Group leaders will make presentations starting at 2:30 p.m.
