Portable air conditioners OK’d for use in Buckman, Thomas halls
August 17, 2007
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida has approved the use of portable air conditioners in Buckman and Thomas halls for this year.
Buckman and Thomas Halls housed the entire UF campus in 1906 and are on the National Historic Register. Today, they are the only UF residence halls without air conditioning. Both halls have been popular housing assignment choices for more than 100 years. In fact, most residents assigned to these facilities request the assignment based on location, hall traditions and lower rent costs. However, some residents are assigned to these two halls when all other residence halls are full. They have lobbied the hardest for air conditioning options over the years.
“We have been exploring AC options for Buckman and Thomas for years, but there were significant roadblocks,” said Sharon Blansett, assistant director of housing. “At this time, we have addressed the roadblocks. Electrical service to these buildings has been upgraded and portable air conditioners are available that will not compromise the historic architecture of the buildings.”
To participate in the new program, residents provide their own portable air conditioners that must meet or surpass a set of health and safety specifications. Additionally, residents are required to maintain their units in a clean and sanitary manner and assume all liabilities related to the use of the units. No additional utility charges will be assessed this year, but staff anticipates additional utility charges to residents participating in the program in future years.
“Staff is excited about offering this new program,” said Ryan Winget, residence life coordinator for the Murphree Area. “While we’re unsure of how many units will actually be placed in rooms, we’re excited to offer this opportunity.”
