Harn Museum photography lecture to feature gallery owner, UF faculty

October 2, 2007

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Harn Museum of Art is featuring works by more than 100 renowned photographers this fall, and a gallery owner and UF faculty will speak on the subject during two upcoming events.

At 3 p.m. on Oct. 7, Bill Hunt, co-owner of New York gallery “Hasted Hunt” and longtime photography collector, will present a humorous, entertaining and slightly irreverent look at the intriguing and impassioned world of art collecting during a lecture titled “The Walls of the Dancing Bear Cave, or “The Stuff I Lugged Home.” Hunt has been collecting photographs for 35 years, and his collection, known as “Collection Dancing Bear,” consists of more than 1,000 magical, heart-stopping images of people whose eyes cannot be seen. He teaches at the School of Visual Arts and serves on the boards of the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund, Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) and the Center for Photography at Woodstock.

At 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 18 during Museum Nights, a panel discussion moderated by Harn curator of photography Tom Southall will explore the success and failures of Modernist photography. Participants include Shep Steiner, visiting assistant professor, UF School of Art and Art History; Andrea Robbins, assistant professor, UF School of Art and Art History; and David Jacobs, professor of art, University of Houston Art Department.
