UF’s Symphony Orchestra pays tribute to Oscar-nominated film scores
March 10, 2008
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The powerful impact that a great film score adds to a motion picture is indisputable. Though composers of film scores may not have achieved the legendary acclaim of Mozart, composers of film scores have caught the attention of many, including the Academy Awards and the University Symphony Orchestra at the University of Florida.
Every year, the Academy Awards recognizes the skilled composers of some truly unforgettable and dramatic masterpieces that emerge from motion pictures. This year, the University Symphony Orchestra is dedicating its performance at 7:30 p.m. on March 20 in the University Auditorium to Oscar-nominated and winning scores.
The University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Raymond Chobaz, will pay tribute to the genius of film composers whose extraordinary dexterity, versatility and musical imagination can only be admired and respected. Joining the ensemble will be School of Music faculty members John Duff, bagpipes; Leslie Odom, oboe; Kevin Orr, piano; and Steven Thomas, violoncello. The evening’s program features familiar scores from film favorites such as “Gone With the Wind,” “Braveheart,” “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” and “Goldfinger.”
Tickets are $8 for the general public and free for UF students with a student ID. For tickets please call the box office at 352-392-ARTS (2787) or visit http://www.ticketmaster.com.
