The Living Room is a site- specific installation by Anna Kell that invites viewers to think about their relationship with nature. The installation will be on display May 19 through August 29.
As we fill our homes with images and reminders of nature, the actual wildness outside our door is transforming, often into disappearance. Using a combination of familiar household furnishings as a surface for a painting, the artist has created an environment that highlights the idea that nature is a human construction. The patterns on the wallpaper, the upholstery on the couch, and the paintings on the wall depict living nature – frozen in time – to beautify our surroundings and enhance our constructed sense of comfort. The painted projection further emphasizes the artist’s concern about our perceived control over nature by framing the interior as a structure which mediates our access to nature.
