Swine flu update
May 1, 2009
In light of recent reports about the swine flu, here is an update for the University of Florida community.
A UF student, who is not presently on campus, was diagnosed with influenza but has not been diagnosed with the swine flu.
The student, who is now fully recovered, had not been to Mexico or had any of the other high-risk exposures the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified. The student also lived off-campus. Samples were sent to the CDC in Atlanta for additional testing and the results are expected early next week as has been reported by the Alachua County Health Department.
The university continues to monitor the situation. All weekend activities will proceed as planned. Hand sanitizer will be available at all commencement ceremonies.
Anyone with questions or concerns can call the Student Health Care Center at 392-1161. Please monitor the UF Web site at www.ufl.edu for updates.
Also UF has implemented a new interim policy for anyone traveling in or returning from Mexico. A link for this policy can be found at www.hr.ufl.edu.
Taking some simple precautions can reduce the spread of germs:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as this spreads germs.
• Call your primary health care provider if you experience flu-like symptoms
• Limit contact with others if you are sick
