November 30, 2009
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Win Phillips, vice president of research at the University of Florida, has been honored for a lifetime of service in engineering by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Phillips received honorary membership in ASME earlier this month at the organization’s 2009 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Lake Buena Vista.
“I am pleased and honored to receive this award,” Phillips said. “I think it is a reflection ofnot only my own contributions to the field, but also the University of Florida’s longstanding commitment to advancing engineering research and education.”
The award recognizes Phillips for “outstanding contributions to mechanical engineering and engineering education through service and leadership in engineering organizations”
including ASME, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and the American Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering.
Phillips joined UF in 1988 as professor of mechanical engineering, research professor of biomedical engineering, and dean of the College of Engineering. In 1999, he was named dean of the UF Graduate School and vice president of research. He continued serving as graduate school dean until 2004.
Before coming to UF, Phillips served as head of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University from 1980 to 1998. He previously held teaching and administrative positions at The Pennsylvania State University, the University of Paris and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
Phillips has been an active member of ASME for decades, including serving as the organization’s president from 1998-99. The nation’s leading mechanical engineering society, ASME promotes collaboration and skill development across engineering disciplines while maintaining the field’s professional codes and standards.
