Seeking readers and edible book entries

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida George A. Smathers Libraries are looking for readers for its eighth annual Read-A-Thon, to be held April 12-14, and entries for the fourth annual Edible Book Contest on April 15.

Readers will share a 10-minute segment of a short story, poem, play or excerpt from a favorite book under the canopy on the Plaza of the Americas in front of Library West. The event, which celebrates National Library Week, will feature free Five Star Pizza and other food for readers and listeners. Monday, April 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is “Humor Day,” Tuesday from 10 a.m. to noon readers will read to elementary age children and noon until2 p.m. will feature young-adult literature. Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is “Open Topic Day.”

The Edible Book Contest will take place on the walkway in front of Library West. The public is invited to vote for the Best Overall entry from 11 to 11:30 a.m. A team of judges will determine the winner in each of the following categories: best book theme, best pun, best adult book and best children’s book. Entries must relate to a book in some way and be edible. Prizes will be given in each category. Winners will be announced at 11:45 a.m. After the announcement, cake will be served.
