Groups to help improve computer security for UF

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida is teaming up with Florida Free Culture to help faculty, staff and students protect their data.
UF’s Information Technology Security Awareness Day 2010 and Florida Free Culture’s Free Your PC event will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Reitz Student Union Auditorium and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Reitz Student Union Colonnade, respectively.
ITSA Day aims to inform professional IT workers in education, law enforcement, business, and state and local government about relevant security topics. The event also provides networking opportunities with other IT professionals from UF, the local community and around the state.
Sean Bodmer from Damballa Inc.; Kevin Johnson from Secure Ideas; Brian Jack from GFI Software; and Jerry McCarthy from Verizon Business will discuss cyber warfare, Web client attacks, virtual environment security and other current trends affecting information security.
In addition, Florida Free Culture will offer free McAfee anti-virus to anyone affiliated with the university at its Free Your PC event. The organization will also install Firefox and Thunderbird, and offer other open source software, including Open Office, Pidgin and GIMP.
The events are free and open to the public. No registration is required.
