Gov. Scott reappoints Carlos Alfonso to UF Board of Trustees

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Gov. Rick Scott on Tuesday announced the reappointment of Carlos J. Alfonso to the University of Florida Board of Trustees.

Alfonso’s new term ends Jan. 6, 2016. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

“Carlos is well known and well respected among business and governmental leaders all over the state. He’s one of the most devoted Gators I know, and his service to the university is greatly appreciated,” UF President Bernie Machen said.

A UF trustee since the board was created in 2001 and elected vice chairman in 2009, Alfonso, 56, is a founding principal and chief executive officer of Alfonso Architects, an award-winning architectural firm in Tampa. He also is founder and CEO of Alliant Partners in Tampa, a real estate consulting, management and development entity with diverse experience and assignments throughout the United States.

Alfonso earned both a bachelor of design and a master of arts degree in architecture from UF. He was awarded the 2002 UF College of Architecture Alumni Award and the Young Architect’s Design Award from the UF College of Architecture in 1995. Alfonso Architects was named 2003 Firm of the Year in Florida by the Florida Chapter of The American Institute of Architects.

Alfonso is a director of the Florida Council of 100, a director of The Florida Wildlife Foundation; an advisory board member of USAmeriBank, and is the ex-officio trustee member of the UF Foundation’s Board of Directors, serving on its executive committee.

In addition, he previously served on the state of Florida’s Constitution Revision Commission (1997-1998); The Florida Communities Trust; The Super Bowl XLIII Board of Directors; The Mercantile Bank Board of Directors; The Florida 2012 Board of Directors, Florida TaxWatch Board of Directors; and The Tampa Bay History Center Board of Directors.

He is a Florida-licensed architect and Class A General Contractor and holds multiple pilot ratings. He and his wife, Dorothy, have three children and live in Tampa.
