Group premieres professor's fanfare at Phillips
February 27, 2012
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Boston Brass will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Student tickets are $12.
As part of its repertoire, the brass quintet will premiere a fanfare written by UF professor and award-winning composer Paul Richards titled “Adrenaline Junky.”
“This is a flashy fanfare, there’s nothing subtle about it,” Richards said. “There are a lot of notes in a short amount of time and it should help start the evening off with a bang.”
As part of its 25th anniversary celebration in 2011, Boston Brass’ “25 Fanfares Project” premiered 25 fanfares by local composers all over the country. Due to the success of the project, the group decided to continue premiering fanfares on tour stops and reached out to Richards.
Boston Brass is known for performing a variety of musical styles in unique arrangements, resulting in lively performances touched with humor and personality. The group has played in 49 states and 21 countries, and has conducted master classes around the world.
The quintet helped raise more than $100,000 for VH1’s Save the Music program and has been featured on “The CBS Early Show” and National Public Radio’s “Performance Today.” Boston Brass’ most recent album, “Latin Nights,” is a collection of some of the greatest classical and jazz works by Latin composers and performers.
