UF's department of recreational sports to host Strong Gator competition

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Spectators are invited to watch 58 University of Florida students test their pure strength, speed, explosive strength, conditioning and muscular endurance in the department of recreational sports’ Strong Gator Competition from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Maguire Field.
Competitors will first test their skills in the log clean and press, atlas stone, and yoke walk before competing in a medley of events including the prowler push, farmer’s walk and tire flip.
Weight classes include: female less than 140 pounds; female, more than 140 pounds; male, less than 175 pounds; male, 175-204 pounds; and male, more than 205 pounds. There will be prizes for the top finishers in each weight class.
David Bowles, director of the department of recreational sports, said the crowds made a difference last year.
“Spectators were able to see an event like no other at the University of Florida,” he said. “The energy and excitement from the crowd created an electrifying atmosphere for the competitors.”
