School of Theater + Dance chosen for national festival

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida School of Theatre + Dance has been chosen for recognition at the National College Dance Festival May 24–27.

The festival highlights the outstanding quality of choreography and performance on college and university campuses by bringing together schools from all over the country to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Nationally recognized judges at the 11 American College Dance Festival Association regional conferences have selected 30 participating schools. Selections are based on outstanding artistic excellence and merit.

UF’s winning work, “Wired,” was choreographed by Israeli guest artist Yaniv Abraham during Swamp Dance Festival 2011, a summer dance intensive program hosted on the UF campus. The performance and the festival were directed by assistant professor Neta Pulvermacher.

Design credits are School of Theatre + Dance students Ryan Bible (lighting) and Erica Bascom (costumes).

“Wired” was performed at the American College Dance Festival Southeastern Conference by the following UF dance students: Emma Geisdorf, Joey Loto, Lacey Moore, Kendra Hamann, Sarah Haggerty, Marissa Maxcy, Kyle Mosler, Melissa Mendez and Whitney Wilson. Whitney Wilson, whose original work “Watched Pots” was adjudicated for presentation at this year’s ACDF Southeastern conference, was rehearsal director for “Wired.”

The American College Dance Festival Association supports and affirms dance in higher education through regional conferences, the adjudication process and national festivals.
