University of Florida launches online master's degree in music education

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida is now accepting applications for a new 100 percent online master’s degree in music education adapted from its campus counterpart.

The Master of Music in Music Education is intended for students with a bachelor’s degree in music education and experience teaching in a K-12 classroom. However, candidates with a bachelor’s in music will also be considered, provided they have a strong professional background in teaching. Potential students should be aware that this program does not lead to state teaching certification.

Taught by a nationally and internationally recognized faculty of music authors, presenters, conductors and educators, this online, advanced degree is designed to prepare music educators with the most current knowledge and approaches for effective music teaching. Some of the topics that will be explored in the program include music from throughout the world, the role of technology, assessment and instructional design in education.

The degree is structured in eight-week courses, with two courses per semester, and culminates with a 16-week capstone course. It is possible to complete this program within two years.

The Master of Music in Music Education is one of more than 50 degree and certificate programs UF offers online, helping many working professionals advance their education and continue in their professional position.

The School of Music is part of the College of Fine Arts and plays an important role in the academic life of the university and the community. The school serves 75 graduate and 200 undergraduate music majors, and UF programs in music education are approved by the Florida Department of Education and accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
