UF's Wi-Fi network now unified for better security

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Projects completed this summer to the University of Florida’s wireless network mean an easier, more unified Wi-Fi experience for all Gators, and better security for both end-users and UF’s wireless network.

UF now offers unified wireless across the main campus. How does this benefit end-users? Upgrades to the wireless network provide IP mobility. IP mobility means Wi-Fi connections remain “live” while users travel around covered areas of the main campus, including much of the Housing and Residence Education areas and the Academic Health Center. The new unified wireless network also includes credential caching, which solves the problem of having to re-enter your GatorLink password multiple times.

The wireless log-in “ufw” is being retired in August.
In place of “ufw,” users will see:

• “uf” for general GatorLink access
• “ufinfo” for assistance with configuration and problem resolution
• “ufvisitor” in select public areas for casual use

In addition to improving the UF Wi-Fi user experience, project work also included security improvements that check all wireless devices during log-in for up-to-date anti-virus software and firewall protection.

Beginning July 16, everyone trying to connect to campus Wi-Fi must have up-to-date security protection installed on their laptops or mobile devices. Devices without the minimum security requirements will be redirected to a Web page with documentation and links to download the recommended security software.

Not sure if your laptop or mobile device is up-to-date? It can be easily checked by visitinghttp://getonline.ufl.edu. Faculty and staff using UF-owned computers to connect to the university’s Wi-Fi should contact their department IT group first to update university-owned equipment.
