Shands Fitness and Wellness Center gives public the chance to ride like bike pros
July 11, 2012
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Ride like a pro during the 99th Tour de France bike race. Shands Fitness and Wellness Center at Shands at the University of Florida invites guests to experience some of the world’s most famous bike trails virtually.
The center’s Virtual Tour de Shands offers simulations of several famous bicycle race trails including the Durango-Trimble Soak in Colorado, the Kloof Nek in South Africa and the Alpe d’Huez in France, one of the most famous stages of the Tour de France.
“We’re just trying to promote health and wellness through cycling, in conjunction with the most challenging cycling event,” said Jeff Plasschaert, director of the Virtual Tour de Shands.
Participants can bring their own bikes or use those available at the center. The bikes, set up on training platforms, are connected to computers that mimic the selected course. Riders will see the changing course and surrounding scenery on video monitors as they pedal. Individuals and teams with the best times will win prizes. The event lasts until July 21.
This opportunity is available to the public from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays, at a cost of $10 per session.
People who miss the Tour de Shands are still welcome to participate in virtual bike races year-round at the center.
Shands Fitness and Wellness Center is located in the Shands at UF South Campus parking garage, 1310 SW 13th Street, Gainesville. Call Jeff Plasschaert at 352-733-0834 to register or to get more information.
