Nine graduate students receive mentoring awards

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Graduate School at the University of Florida and the Innovation through Institutional Integration Program announce that nine graduate students have received the 2012 Graduate Student Mentoring Award.

The award has been established this year to recognize graduate students who take time to help others succeed as graduate or undergraduate students or in K-12 classrooms. The award is particularly designed to acknowledge the mentoring contribution from the graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines, known as STEM, and including the social, behavioral and economic sciences.

The recipients were:
Gina Alvarado, sociology.
Amy Borello, environmental engineering.
Wendy Helmey-Hartman, entomology, nematology.
Caitlin Hicks-Pries, biology.
Christine Lee, educational psychology.
Tiffany Morrow, educational psychology.
Sarah Nolan, counseling psychology.
Victor Olivieri, comparative politics and international relations.
Esther Tebbe, counseling and psychology.

The award committee, consisting of faculty, staff, and graduate students, received more than 75 nominations for the award.

The winners were recognized Oct. 23 during the 2012 Graduate Student Research Day. Recipients, their faculty advisers and mentees were invited to attend the award ceremony.
