UFPD to check for proper lighting on bicycles
November 5, 2012
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida Police Department will be checking for proper lighting on bicycles from 6 to 9 p.m. today on the east side of campus.
With darkness coming earlier because of the change from daylight saving time this past weekend, this detail is intended to remind UF community members of the need and legal requirements for lights on their bicycles.
Florida law requires all bicycles in use between sunset and sunrise be equipped with a white light on the front of the bicycle and a red light and red reflector on the rear.
Police officers will focus primarily on issuing warnings for bicycle light violations. Officers will distribute flashing red lights that are worn on the bicyclist’s body and coupons for 50 percent discounts on bicycle light kits at Chain Reaction. The store will also offer 20 percent off on bicycle light sets through November to students who show their UFID.
