Fifth annual Stomp the Swamp for Autism scheduled for Feb. 9
January 30, 2013
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The fifth annual Stomp the Swamp for Autism will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 9 at the University of Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
Stomp the Swamp is a fitness event in support of UF’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, or CARD, which provides care for more than 2,500 families in 14 counties across North Central Florida.
Participants can run or walk the stadium steps or the inner track of the stadium and will have the chance to win prizes in a number of categories. Activities will be available for all age groups and abilities.
The event will include live entertainment from radio station KISS 105.3, free breakfast, a variety of events led by student organizations and silent auction items.
Hosted by UF first lady Chris Machen, the event is family friendly and free for children 12 and younger. Children can participate in a special relay and enjoy arts, crafts and games.
“Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the U.S.,” said Ashley Giddings, one of the event’s organizers and a UF student. “I would encourage students, parents and the community to attend because Stomp the Swamp is a great way to raise awareness and show support for those with autism in our community.”
Last year, Stomp the Swamp raised $7,000. This year’s goal is $10,000, said CARD Director Greg Valcante. The money maintains support groups for teens and adults with autism and brings care to those who can’t commute to the center.
“These services are beyond the scope of what we’re funded to do, but they are important,” Valcante said.
To register, go to http://uffuflevents.imodules.com/STS2013. Advanced registration is $15 and the first 200 people to register will receive a T-shirt. Registration will be available for $20 at 9 a.m. on Feb. 9. Participants can register as individuals or as a team. The team with the most members will receive a cash prize.
