UF group helps ‘doctoral moms’ to stay in school

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — PhDMoms, a graduate student organization at the University of Florida, presents a program titled “Getting Started Before You Finish” at 3:30 p.m. today in Corry Commons in Corry Village.

Linda Behar-Horenstein, a distinguished lecturer, will present the program. An expert in the field of education and student-training, Behar-Horenstein will speak to doctoral moms and other graduate student parents with information to help prepare students for the most “dangerous” portion of a doctoral program, the dissertation phase.

Since Melody Schiaffino founded PhDMoms in 2012 with co-founder Hannah Siburt, the group has increased visibility of the needs of student-parents on campus, attracted the attention of the administration and received support from Student Government for a unanimous resolution from the student body backing their efforts.

Now they are targeting academic success.

“The biggest concern for the more advanced moms who are focused on writing is what happens when you graduate,” Siburt said. “Finishing a dissertation and finding a job are two major issues occurring at the same time.”
