Name change reflects evolution of faith group

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The University of Florida’s Campus Ministry Cooperative has become the Campus Multi-Faith Cooperative.
“As our network has grown to include more faiths, we decided to update our name to be more inclusive to our members who may be misrepresented by the ministry designation,” said Jeff Kaplan, chair of the new group.
CMC comprises religious organizations and centers in the vicinity of the UF campus, dedicated to meeting the personal, religious and social needs of university students, faculty and staff.
Each organization seeks to enrich lives by providing opportunities for growth through fellowship, educational programs, worship services, recreation, entertainment and the development of one’s faith. Each adheres to the principles of its own tradition but all accept and support the work of other members of the cooperative.
“The CMC has served the students, faculty, and staff at the University of Florida for over 30 years being a model of acceptance and understanding while enriching the lives of the Gator Nation,” Kaplan said.
The CMC at UF dates from the early 1950s. Its current structure evolved during the 1980s under Vice President of Student Affairs Art Sandeen and Dean of Students Jim Scott.
“The CMC exists to be a network of faith-based groups that work with each other and the University to enhance on- and off-campus life through programs and outreach,” Kaplan said.
CMC fall events include “Diversity In Values: Multi-Faith Panel on the Religions of UF” at 7 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Reitz Student Union Grand Ballroom and the annual CMC Progressive Dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 5 at the faith community facilities along University Avenue.
The CMC is also participating in UF Preview this summer, tabling as a resource for the newest Gators and their parents. Students interested in membership within a CMC organization are encouraged to fill out a Preference Card on the CMC website online at www.UFCMC.com.
Many more events are planned to celebrate the religious diversity at the University of Florida. All events are free and open to the public. More information about the cooperative and events can be found at www.UFCMC.com.
During their final meeting of the spring semester, the CMC elected leaders to serve a one-year term. Kaplan will continue to serve as chair and Carl Woodham will continue as secretary. Joining the team will be Debby Cherwak as treasurer.
