Summer B semester brings slew of cultural opportunities

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — This summer, the University of Florida brings a world of creativity, culture and performance to campus and beyond with CREATIVE B.

CREATIVE B comprises art, film, dance, music, theatre and travel centering on one common goal: to be creative this summer. Events, performances, and exhibitions are going on across campus, across Gainesville and elsewhere.

Introduced by Academic Affairs and the Office of the Provost in 2010, CREATIVE B is designed to educate and entertain with a wide variety of live cultural performances and interdisciplinary summer activities.

“We look forward to Creative B enlivening the campus atmosphere during the summer B term through unique and innovative programming,” said Provost Joe Glover.

Here are the events:

WINDS OF CHANGE
This series of three installations of silk kites by artists Ruth Whiting and Tim Elverston showcases the dynamic energy inherent in the interdisciplinary collaboration between science and art; specifically the aerodynamics of flight and the sculptural forms of the hand-made kites and their impact within the space itself. Kites will be soaring at the Harn Museum of Art through Sept. 22, UFHealth Cancer Center from June 23 to Aug. 18, and the UF Engineering Building, from June 25 to Sept. 28. Free and open to the public.

COLLEGE OF JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATIONS
Tours of the Innovative News Center will be given from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 9. The college will host tours led by COJ Ambassadors of the new Innovation News Center and other media properties in Weimer Hall. Free and open to the public.

SWAMP DANCE FEST
A month-long program of classes, artists’ talks and performances culminates in public performances at the Maguire Pavilion Black Box Theatre July 25-28. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster outlets and 800-745-3000.

FLORIDA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
Saturday night movie series with expert discussions. “King Kong” at 7 p.m. July 6; “Harry and the Hendersons” at 7 p.m. July 13; “Creature from the Black Lagoon” at 7 p.m. July 20; and “Trail of the Skunk Ape” at 7 p.m. July 27. Free and open to the public.

HARN MUSEUM OF ART
Enjoy dance, art, music and a gallery talk by featured artists Tim Elverston & Ruth Whiting at Museum Night ~ Creative Be! Thursday, July 11 from 6pm – 9pm. Free and open to the public.

UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA PERFORMING ARTS
24-Hour Film Competition. Participants will check in at 2 p.m. July 20 and make a 5-minute film in the next 24 hours. Films will be screened after dark on July 21. The competition and screenings are free and open to the public.

GET OUT OF TOWN!
