Performing arts lineup for October includes two world premieres

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida Performing Arts will present 10 different events, including two world premieres, in October.
On Oct. 11, the Turtle Island String Quartet and multi-instrumentalist Nellie McKay combine talents for a world premiere collaboration at University Auditorium. Just a few days later, on Oct. 20, Spanish string quartet Cuarteto Casals and Grammy-nominated guitarist Manuel Barrueco join forces for the month’s second world premiere collaboration.
UFPA will feature six musicals during the 2013-14 season, two of which will make a stop at the Phillips Center this October. The megahit “Mamma Mia!” on Oct. 14 (featuring ASL interpretation) and the autobiographical stage account of one of rock ‘n roll’s legends, “The Buddy Holly Story” on Oct. 23.
Jazz greats Billy Childs and Kenny Barron will make appearances during the month – Childs with his Jazz-Chamber Ensemble and special guests Dianne Reeves and the Ying Quartet on Oct. 6, and Barron with his Platinum Band on Oct. 24.
Two of the world’s premier dance companies will also grace UFPA stages. The Scottish Ballet presents their take on Tennessee Williams’ classic “A Streetcar Named Desire” Oct. 10 while Diavolo Dance Theatre will present their newest work, “Transit Space,” and Trajectoire Oct. 16.
Rounding out the month’s schedule will be pianist Orion Weiss in recital Oct. 13 and the Austrian-based brass group, dubbed the “Month Pythons of music,” Mnozil Brass on Oct. 27
