GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The following events are scheduled in the near future at or near the University of Florida:
New Henry sculpture coming
Artist John Raymond Henry — responsible for the “French Fries” sculpture near Marston Science Library — will install another of his monumental steel sculptures in front of the parking garage at the Cultural Plaza Feb. 11-12. “Big Max,” which is 33 feet high and 65 feet long, will be installed Feb. 11 and painted the next day. Henry will be on site both days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and available for interviews.

Student engineers celebrate
Engineers’ Week 2014 at UF will include a variety of activities Feb. 11-25, including an Engineering and Science Fair Feb. 18-19, a Mr. Engineer Pageant Feb. 20 and a Robotics Showcase Feb. 23.

Residence hall groundbreaking
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 14 for Cypress Hall, a new residence hall at the northwest corner of SW 13th Street and Museum Road. The new hall will increase the number of beds for all undergraduates, including those with higher levels of physical disability support needs. UF officials will speak.

Florida canal book discussed
UF history professors Steven Noll and David Tegeder will lead a conversation about their award-winning 2010 book, “Ditch of Dreams: The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida’s Future,” at 7 p.m. Feb. 17 in Smathers Library East, Room 100. The book tells the story of an abandoned shipping canal designed to cut through the state, mapping out the complex and competing interests that still influence Florida’s political landscape.

Lecture examines Bhopal tragedy
Ranganathan Narayanan, distinguished UF engineering professor, will deliver the lecture, “Bhopal – A Tale of Technology, Tragedy and Travesty,” at 4 p.m. Feb. 17 in Emerson Alumni Hall. The lecture about the 1984 pesticide plant leak in Bhopal, India, that caused or led to the deaths of thousands of people, is the second installment in the Faculty Senate’s Distinguished Professor Lecture Series.

Education critic to speak
Diana Senechal, theorist and critic of public education, will deliver a lecture titled “The Slow Murmur of Learning: Honoring Substance and Solitude in Education,” at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Hippodrome State Theater. Senechal will share her critique of public education’s emphasis on testing and rapid feedback. Her work has appeared in The Washington Post, The New Republic and elsewhere. The lecture is presented by the UF Center for the Humanities in the Public Sphere.

Digital designer to speak
Duane Bray, head of global digital business for the design consultancy IDEO and a UF graduate with a master’s in digital media, will be the second speaker in the spring 2014 Innovation Academy Speaker Series. He will speak at 5:10 p.m. Feb. 20 in the New Physics Building, Room 1001. Bray has vast experience contributing to design projects as diverse as interactive exhibits and mobile software.
