Students’ robots to be demonstrated in New Engineering Building

April 22, 2014

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Demonstrations of more than a dozen robots built by University of Florida Intelligent Machines Design Lab students will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. April 23 in the New Engineering Building Harris Rotunda.

Trash2D2 will go around and collect guests’ trash; a wave of your hand and he will lift his lid. Caddy will find and collect golf balls. The Sea Turtle Sentinel will look for (simulated) active turtle nests. Another robot reacts to a flute to follow musical instructions about his movements. A xylophone-playing robot composes his own melodies based on one of several selected songs and influenced by environmental sensors. The event will also showcase the Machine Intelligence Laboratory, known as MIL.

Specific descriptions of the robots can be found here.

The 2013 MIL created PropaGator, a robot boat, which won the 2013 AUVSI/ONR international robot boat (RoboSub) world championship. The latest version of a robot submarine (SubjuGator 7) will also be shown. The lab’s submarines have won three and placed in the top three in the 16 years of the AUVSI/ONR international robot submarine (RoboSub) world championships; in 2012 and 2013, UF earned second place.
