GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The following events are scheduled in the near future at or near the University of Florida:

Dr. Ardis Dee Hoven, immediate past president of the American Medical Association, will discuss the organization's aims to create a brighter future for U.S. health care at 6 p.m. Sept. 8 in Pugh Hall. Hoven specializes in internal medicine and infectious diseases and has testified before Congress on health care reform. The event and parking are free and open to the public.

2014 Diaspora Tour comes to UF

The 2014 Diaspora Tour will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 in Pugh Hall to provide information about initiatives on diaspora engagement and how to get involved with Global Diaspora Week, Oct. 12-18. The event will feature a keynote address by Andrew O’Brien, the U.S. Department of State special representative for global partnerships, and a panel discussion with leading diaspora experts. Talk focused on the future of religion, political mobilization

Brian Calfano, professor of political science at Missouri State University, will give a talk on how religion drives political mobilization among demographic groups at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 in Pugh Hall. Calfano is policy advisor for the City of Los Angeles Human Relations Commission and co-author of the book “God Talk: Experimenting with the Religious Causes of Public Opinion.”

Founder of Storyful to speak on social media

The UF College of Journalism and Communications will host a discussion at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18 in Weimer Hall about how on-the-ground social media affect news coverage. Mark Little, founder of Storyful, will talk about new journalism ethics and how social media inspires and informs the news. He is the first speaker in The Innovators Series at UF. Graduate Student Research Day set for Oct. 28

UF’s Graduate Student Advisory Council will host the third annual Graduate Research Day Oct. 28 in the Reitz Student Union. The event is open to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and associates, researchers and faculty. Undergraduate students participating in research are also encouraged to attend. Activities will include a poster competition, a networking workshop, a panel discussion with UF’s new scholars it areas of preeminence, and an information session on how to get involved.
