UF receives national community service award for second time in five years
December 11, 2014
The University of Florida was named to the 2014 President’s Higher Education Community Service Roll for outstanding volunteer service to the community. UF most recently received the award in 2009. The university was honored in the General Service Category and the Education Category, which recognizes institutions with a significant focus on improving educational outcomes for children and youth in pre-kindergarten through graduate education.
UF reported more than 36,000 students participating in community service during the 2012-2013 academic year, and more than 170,000 hours of time dedicated to these activities. The value of these volunteers time totaled more than $3.7 million of economic impact in the areas they served.
Inspired by a group of students who came together to serve their community, the UF Center for Leadership and Service was created to bring together service-learning, student volunteerism, and leadership development. The Center provides the structure and resources to prepare students to become productive citizens and assume roles of leadership and service in a culturally diverse and increasingly complex society. The Center fosters lifelong service and civic participation by engaging the university with its greater community in action, change and learning.
The President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships.
