SACCHARIN CANCER – Saccharin may have a role in fighting cancer, according to new findings by a group of UF and Australian researchers. The artificial sweetener deactivates a protein that is found in some aggressive cancers that affect the breast, lung, and kidney, among other parts of the body. By deactivating the protein, cancer cells have a harder time thriving and metastasizing.

Wednesday, March 25

TERMITES – New research findings about termites swarming in South Florida.

Thursday, March 26

ADDED: UF BOT Committee on Educational Policy and Strategy Conference Call Meeting (Mar. 30)

THROWING INJURY – Baseball season is here, and just in time, new UF research shows a tear called an ulnar collateral ligament tear, is occurring more and more frequently in younger and younger pitchers. The tear, which results in the Tommy John surgery, occurs most often in players who come from or play in Southern states--because they can basically play ball all year round. Researchers hope to drive home the message to parents and coaches that overuse in high school because of a single focus on a sport leads to injuries in college. So players shouldn't pay through pain, especially in their pitching shoulders and arms.
