UF 2015 Goldwater Scholars announced

The University of Florida has announced the winners and runners-up of the 2015 Barry Goldwater Scholarship Award.
The two Goldwater Scholars and their majors/career goals are:
- Colin R. Defant (sophomore)
Major: mathematics
Career Goal: Ph.D. in mathematics. Conduct mathematical research and teach at the university level.
- Lauren A. McCarthy (junior)
Major: chemistry
Career Goal: Ph.D. in physical chemistry. Conduct research in physical chemistry and teach at the university level.
Those receiving honorable mention awards were:
- Kevin J. Anderton (junior)
Major: chemistry
Career Goal: Ph.D. in chemistry. Conduct research in inorganic chemistry and teach at the university level.
- Jennifer R. Crawford (sophomore)
Major: physics
Career Goal: Ph.D. in physics. Conduct condensed matter physics research and teach at a university level.
The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate.
The purpose of the foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue research careers in these fields.
