From Liverpool to Lake Wobegon, the UFPA 2015-2016 season offers a world of variety.
May 19, 2015
Michael Blachly, University of Florida Performing Arts director, announced the lineup for the 2015-2016 season, which has something to suit just about everybody's taste. Blachly, who retires in September, curated the upcoming season with hopes that it will capture the essence of the programs at UFPA during his 15 years as director. The season will feature 41 events from July through April.
This season will also showcase UFPA’s commitment to the Western European traditions on which the program was founded, with performances by the Munich Symphony Orchestra; Emanuel Ax; and Andreas Haefliger with Marina Piccinini in a duo flute and piano recital.
A uniquely framed contemporary program by the Art of Time Ensemble will present the entirety of the Beatles classic “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in a uniquely innovative and artistically interpreted program that is far from a “cover band approach to the iconic work.”
Garrison Keillor will once again bring his light-hearted, personal overview of the philosophies of Lake Wobegon to the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
Other anticipated performances include Opetaia Foai’i’s Polynesian band TE VAKA, Celtic Nights – Spirit of Freedom, the world premiere of an a cappella performance titled Vocalosity: The Aca-perfect Concert Experience and touring musicals that run the gamut from “Ragtime” to “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.”
Young concert artists will continue to be a feature of this season's offerings, with a highlight performance of the rising stars of the Metropolitan Opera in repertory from their upcoming season, as well as UFPA's own array of soloists.
Tickets for the 2015-2016 season go on sale to the general public at noon on Saturday, July 18. For a complete list of the season – including times, dates, venues, prices and event descriptions – please visit www.performingarts.ufl.edu.
